MONROVIA – Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus, Senator of Lofa County and football administrator, has pledged sweeping reforms and renewed investment in Liberian football as he intensifies his campaign for a seat on the Executive Committee of the Liberia Football Association ahead of the association’s elective congress.
The Liberia Football Association is expected to hold its much-anticipated elective congress on May 15, 2026, where Senator Cyrus — Chief Executive Officer of Wologisi FC, champions of Liberia’s Second Division League — is contesting for a position on the football governing body’s Executive Committee.
The LFA Congress serves as the association’s highest decision-making authority, responsible for approving policies, admitting clubs, endorsing budgets, and electing football officials.
Cyrus Officially Declares Candidacy
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement held at his residence in Monrovia, Senator Cyrus officially declared his candidacy and reaffirmed his commitment to transforming football across Liberia.
According to the lawmaker, his passion for football development extends beyond politics and requires direct involvement in football governance through the LFA Executive Committee.
“My senatorial position alone cannot fully achieve the level of football development I envision unless stakeholders give me the opportunity to serve through the Executive Committee,” Senator Cyrus stated.
He appealed to club owners, delegates, and football stakeholders to support his bid, promising to use his leadership experience, professional network, and management skills to advance the game nationally.
Promises Support for Women’s Football
One of the strongest commitments made by Senator Cyrus was his pledge to redirect all legitimate compensation and sitting fees received as an Executive Committee member toward the development of women’s football in Liberia.
According to him, the promise reflects the same approach he adopted during his senatorial campaign in Lofa County, where he pledged to reinvest portions of his earnings into development initiatives.
He said that commitment has already contributed to several improvements within the county.
Senator Cyrus further emphasized the need for financially independent individuals within football leadership structures, arguing that such leaders are better positioned to make objective and impactful decisions for the advancement of the sport.
Calls for Visionary Football Leadership
The Senator stressed that global football is evolving rapidly and warned that Liberia risks falling behind if the LFA fails to embrace innovation, strategic leadership, and institutional reform.
He highlighted his background in leadership, negotiation, diplomacy, relationship-building, marketing, and security as qualities that could positively benefit Liberian football administration.
“We need visionary and innovative people within the Executive Committee who can help Liberia keep pace with modern football development around the world,” he declared.
Cyrus also pledged support for the agenda of current LFA President Mustapha I. Raji while promising to contribute particularly in the area of sports security, which he described as one of his professional specialties.
Legislature Working on Sports Investment Bill
During the meeting, Senator Cyrus revealed that the Liberian Legislature is currently considering a proposed “Liberia Sports Authority” bill aimed at encouraging concession companies and private corporations to invest in clubs and sports development nationwide.
According to him, the proposed legislation could significantly improve funding opportunities and institutional support for sports organizations across Liberia.
Though he acknowledged that basketball — not football — was his primary sport during his younger years, Senator Cyrus said his passion for football grew during his involvement with the National County Sports Meet, where he served as Steering Committee Chairperson.
He explained that his experiences there ultimately inspired the establishment and growth of Wologisi FC into Liberia’s top-flight football structure.
‘I’m Not in Football for Money’
The Senator further disclosed that despite his significant personal investment into football development, he has never financially benefited from the sport.
According to him, his involvement in football is driven entirely by passion for youth development, sports advancement, and national progress rather than personal financial gain.
“I have invested heavily into football, but I have never personally benefited financially from it,” he stated.
Stakeholders Endorse Cyrus
Several football stakeholders attending the gathering publicly endorsed Senator Cyrus’ candidacy.
Among them was Thomas H. Kangbah, Vice President of Liberian Falconets FC, who urged delegates to rally behind the Senator, describing him as a generous and supportive leader whose contributions have positively impacted many lives.
Kangbah credited Senator Cyrus for supporting his transition from journalism into sports administration.
Also speaking, Randelle Youboty, Vice President of Real Muja FC, praised Cyrus’ hardworking spirit and assured him of the club’s full support during the elections.
Meanwhile, Faikpai Roberts reflected on Senator Cyrus’ contributions during the National County Sports Meet, revealing that the lawmaker personally financed major welfare improvements for county team players, including accommodation, feeding, and player motivation.
According to Roberts, those interventions significantly improved team morale and professionalism despite the county not winning the competition.
As campaigning intensifies ahead of the Liberia Football Association elections, Senator Cyrus continues to attract endorsements from football stakeholders across the country, further strengthening his position heading into the decisive vote.
